Sergeant John VanderYacht

Sergeant John VanderYacht joined the Ferndale Police Department in 1999. Besides his regular patrol duties, John  was the Crime Prevention Officer Officer John VanderYachtfor many years, as well as the School Resource Officer for the Ferndale School District and a Field Training Officer. He was promoted to Sergeant in September, 2006.

Before coming to Ferndale, John served in the US Army as an Infantryman with the 10th Mountain Division. During this time John served combat tours in Mogadishu, Somalia and Port-a-Prince, Haiti. This experience also allowed him to travel the world.

John is very committed to the area of Juvenile Crime and has served on such boards as Whatcom County Teen Court, Drug Free Youth, and the Whatcom County Juvenile Justice Center Advisory Board. John frequently speaks to low risk juvenile offenders and their families through the Whatcom County Community Links Program.

In 2002, John was awarded the City's Medal of Merit for his "professionalism and significant restraint in the face of immediate danger," for his actions in dealing with an armed and suicidal subject.
