Ferndale Holiday Giving Store

The Ferndale Holiday Giving Store was initiated in 2003. Staff from both the school system and community service sector were concerned about the ever-growing population of homeless and very low-income families living in the Ferndale area who were struggling to make a special holiday season for their children. The Ferndale Community Service Cooperative now sponsors the HGS annually, allowing parents to “shop” for gifts and an article of warm clothing for their children. Beginning with 120 children in 2003 the HGS was able to serve 400 in 2007.

Businesses, churches, schools, organizations and individuals stock the store through a variety of fundraising activities. Donation boxes are made available in many businesses around town, beginning in mid November.

The distribution of gifts is by appointment on December 19 and 20, for families who have filled out an application. Needy families who live in theFerndale School District and who are not being served by other agencies, churches, or organizations are encouraged to apply to the Ferndale Holiday Giving Store. The applications are available from the Family Community Coordinators at the elementary schools, and in the Ferndale School District Office on Vista Drive.

The Salvation Army will check all names for duplication with other charitable projects.

Volunteer Opportunities Available

  1. Coordinate a fundraiser at your place of work, church, school or community group
  2. Join the Planning Committee and assist with contacting businesses, churches and organizations for donations.
  3. Shop with donated funds to stock the store.
  4. Set up and display the goods in the holiday giving store.
  5. Pick up donations from boxes regularly and transport to HGS.
  6. Help parents shop during open store days, Dec.19 and 20.
  7. Donate gifts or money to the Holiday Giving Store.
